Women still get fired every day for pregnancy-related reasons, and the Pregnancy Discrimination Act of 1978 and the Family and Medical Leave Act of 1993 only provide so much protection. If your pregnancy limits your ability to perform the essential functions of your job without an “accomodation,” under federal law women are still completely out of luck, and luck should have nothing to do with it. Support the Pregnant Workers Fairness Act, a law that would require employers to be flexible with its pregnant employees who need a “reasonable accommodation” during their pregnancies in order to remain gainfully employed (as opposed to being summarily fired)similar to the way the Americans with Disabilities Act protects disabled workers.
